The 2024 Presidential candidates seem to be playing election-year seesaw. One day, President Trump is “leading in the polls” and Vice President Harris “is slipping in the polls,” and vice versa.
The real question is - is Jesus is slipping in the polls? If He is, it will be because Christians did not take Him into the voting booth with them. Many Christians will check their faith at the precinct's door and vote based on their preferences, opinions, or agenda without first consulting the Lord or His Word.
How will you vote in this Election? I am not asking for whom you will vote. I am asking “how” you will vote? On what criteria will you base your decision – party, policy, or persona?
Voters have always made their decisions based on a myriad of criteria – religious beliefs, economic or educational needs, staunch party lines, policies, and personalities, to name a few.
Whatever your reasons and motivations for voting, the most important thing is that you vote. It is your right and privilege as an American citizen to do so. Many have died or been severely injured to preserve that right and privilege for you and me. Let us not squander it for the sake of their sacrifice.
But more important than even the rights and privileges afforded us as Americans by the
sacrifices of our fallen heroes, as Christians, there is One Who sacrificed His life to give us the ultimate right and privilege of spending eternity with Him – Jesus Christ. [John 3:16] And as followers and ambassadors of Jesus, we have an even greater responsibility to steward our position in Him, and one way of doing that is by voting for elected officials based on Biblical principles found in God’s Word.
Billy Graham said, “I think it’s the duty of every individual Christian at election time to study the issues, study the candidates, then go to the polls and vote.”
Many voters will go to the polls on November 5, 2024, and they will vote based on staunch party lines, no matter the policies or personalities of those running for office. Others will vote strictly on policy, while some vote solely on personality, and to them I say, "Good luck with that!"
My Christian beliefs based on God’s Word is the criteria I use in casting my vote. The only
“persona” I care about is Jesus Christ.
According to scripture, Jesus, when He walked this earth, was no respecter of persons. He looked past people's personalities and flaws and spoke directly to their spirits, while always keeping God's Word and His ultimate purpose in mind. Jesus called the religious elites of His day, a “brood of vipers,” because He saw their hypocritical hearts, yet He showed grace and mercy to the “woman at the well,” who had had five husbands.
One of the critical issues on the ballot this election year is abortion, and faithful Christians have a responsibility to choose a candidate that most closely aligns with God’s Word. Never mind all the other issues like – the economy, religious liberty, human rights, global religious freedom, protecting our children from dangerous ideologies, parental rights, illegal immigration and the border crisis, our national defense, Israel, wars, and threat of more wars.
All the issues listed above should be of great concern to Christians. We should do as Billy
Graham suggested: "study the issues and the candidates," and then vote based on our findings and our conscience. There will be issues on the ballot that leave room for query, to be sure, but there is at least one issue on the ballot that makes the choice clear for professing Christians.
In the book of Psalms, King David wrote in speaking to God, “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb…” [Psalm 139:13-14]
The Prophet Jeremiah wrote down what God said to him - “Before I [God] formed you in the
womb, I knew you.” [Jeremiah 1:5]
The sixth commandment in the Bible is found in Exodus 20:13, which reads, “Thou shalt not
murder.”
According to scripture, God knows intimately, every human being before they are conceived in their mother’s womb, and God is against murder – which is “the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another.” [www.dictionary.com/murder]
Unfortunately, some very skilled, crafty word-wizards, by way of linguistic smoke and mirrors, have been able to play semantic gymnastics with words such as "baby-killing" and "murder" and give them more palatable terms such as "abortion," “women’s reproductive rights,” and "family planning." Many uninformed and vulnerable people have been deceived into believing that a human "embryo" or a "fetus" is something other than the beginning stages of a human being. I was convinced of that myself over thirty years ago but thank God [literally] I did not take actions based on that lie.
If you are reading this article, you were given the privilege of going through the many stages of human gestation, from conception to delivery. By the grace of God and your birth mother, you were given the gift of life and the chance to reach full development in your mother’s womb. Approximately one million babies a year in the U.S. are not given that privilege.
Abortion may be a political hot topic in our nation, but I assure you, it is an even hotter topic
with God, the creator and originator of ALL life. The Bible says, “…you have sinned against the Lord, and be sure your sin will find you out.” [Numbers 32:23]
Thank God, scripture teaches that through a relationship with His Son Jesus, by His grace, love, and mercy, there is forgiveness, even for murder [abortion] - for the mother, the father, and the doctor, when they come to Him by faith in brokenness and repentance. [John 3:16] [Romans 10:9-10] [1 John 1:9]
However, according to scripture, there is no way for a Christian to justify supporting a candidate who boldly and proudly supports and advocates for the killing of innocent children in the mother’s womb. During the 2024 DNC, Planned Parenthood set up, in essence, a "drive-by" abortion clinic a couple of blocks from the convention.
If “abortion” were the only issue on the ballot this election year, the choice is clear for
Christians. One candidate openly and proudly supports and advocates for it, and the other is proud of his contribution to the overturning of Roe vs. Wade and will put the legislation of
abortion laws into the hands of individual states if he is re-elected. Do your own research. Pray. Find out where each candidate stands on that issue and all the issues before you vote.
Dr. Ben Carson said at a gala event we attended this past weekend – “Unless Jesus Christ
Himself is on the ballot, we are always voting for the ‘lesser of two evils.’”
I am a conservative, independent voter. Thank goodness I do not vote on party or persona. I
prayerfully vote on the policies that most closely align with the Word of God and my biblical
worldview.
I did my part last week to help ensure that Jesus did not slip in the polls when I slipped into the voter booth, and I pray that all Christians, across denominational and party lines, will do the same on November 5. God, help us all. He's the only one Who can.
